Discounted XDarwin Pricing
for Academic Institutions
In the diverse world of campus computing, XDarwin has become an
indispensable tool for Mac OS X users to network with all other Linux and Unix computing environments which are built upon the
prevalent X Window System. XDarwin makes
available sophisticated and easy to use graphical user interfaces and toolkits
via the popular X11 set of protocols.
Faculty and students of higher educational institutions are now eligible for
the academic discount of 30% off of the $59.95 retail package price of XDarwin. On January 1, retail pricing on XDarwin will
be increased to $99.95. This represents
a significant opportunity for university buyers to not only support this
important open source project, but also to obtain the full retail packaging at
a significantly reduced price. Orders
can be placed immediately at: www.xdarwin.com. Purchase orders should be directed to the
contact information in this press release.
Government institutions and employees of national laboratories are also
eligible for the academic discount.
Please note that both academic and retail pricing will be increased in
January.
The first year it was released, XDarwin was deployed in research,
mathematical, and computing laboratories at prestigious institutions worldwide,
including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Carnegie-Mellon, UIUC, Yale, Boston University,
John-Hopkins, Scripps, Washington University, CalTech, five of the U.S.
National Labs, and many others.
International interest has been strong as well, with research groups
from over forty countries among those using the software, including Australia,
Singapore, France,
Germany, Argentina,
and Brazil.
XDarwin 4.2 is continuously supported, with updates occurring this year on a
nearly monthly basis, primarily to address security and stability issues in a
timely manner. With the growth of the internet,
security has never been more important.
XDarwin allows you to securely operate remote sessions via xhost and
explicit support in ssh, the secure shell which is shipped as a default
in all versions of Mac OS X.
If you are not directly using Mac OS X yourself, your colleagues or students
who are Mac users would appreciate learning about XDarwin and having a copy available
to install and use at their convenience. In short, XDarwin enables Mac OS X
users to run X11 applications natively and remotely. This enables secure, cross-network, and local
interaction with the world of open source software as well as compilation of a
myriad of graphical open source applications.
Further information is available from www.xdarwin.org,
including demonstration downloads and an actively moderated technical support
forum.
