What is XDarwin?

XDarwin is an implementation of the window server for version 11 of the X window system on the Darwin operating system, underlying Mac OS X. Information on where to download and how to compile and install XDarwin is available at xfree86.org.

Perhaps the best way for new users to think about XDarwin is in relation to the other architectural components of Mac OS X. Below is a diagram showing the layers of Mac OS X. The top layer shows application environments, with Carbon and Cocoa being Apple's preferred development methods. The next layer down indicates the appearance level. A Window manager is necessary for the user to be able to manipulate windows, just as Aqua and the Platinum appearance allow Mac users to move, close, or resize windows.

XDarwin, like Quartz and QuickDraw, provides a fundamental method for allowing applications to draw to the screen. The lowest layer is occupied by the core operating system, Darwin.
