Although not many people mention their competition these days, we think it is good form. There are other ways to run X windows applications on Mac OS X and/or Darwin. If you know of other projects which should be listed here, please let us know.
X11 - Apple's compile from the XFree86 source includes quartz-wm.
XTools - commercial fork in the XFree86 tree, $199 shipping product.
WiredX - Java X11 server from jcraft that has a packaged installer and runs rootless too
VNC - networkable graphics display system similar in design to X11.
eXodus - another commercial (XFree6-based?) X11 server priced at $295
